Impersonation technic: a reality

Learn how criminals can use impersonation technic to make you call back an unknown phone number or to steal valuable personal information from you.

Example 1

Beware of unknown phone scams: If an unknown number hangs up before you answer, do not call back. Legitimate callers will leave a voicemail for urgent matters. Avoid unexpected charges and potential scams.

Example 2

Beware of unexpected calls claiming to be from your bank or your insurer. No authentic caller will ask for such sensitive information over the phone. Follow this rule to safeguard yourself.

Detect malicious attempts

One of the most common and effective behavior is to trust yourself and stick to your initial intuition. It often happens to be real!
Learn how to assess the legitimacy of any request you receive.

Phishing alert: Urgent delivery confirmation links.

Example:  You receive a mobile text message to click on a link to confirm your destination for a delivery.

Criminals create a sense of urgency to manipulate emotions. Remember, never click without verifying. Ask yourself: Were you expecting a delivery? Can you identify the sender? Are there other ways to track your order?

Here are a few elements to consider at first:
  1. Check the identity: Do you know the sender name, the number, the email address?
  2. Look at the subject of the request: Was it expected? Unusual? Surprising?
  3. Are there any warning signs: Playing with your emotions? Sense of urgency? Big threats? Big promise? Business opportunities?
  4. Assess the type of action required: Immediate action? Click on a link? Open an attachment? Any requirement to share personal information?

Focus on criminal’s technics

The technics used by criminals are no longer as simple as searching for typing or grammatical mistakes. Their attempts look like original ones using a real image of a CEO, duplicating the template of official branded communication, etc.

Be aware, they also take advantage of specific festive periods (black Friday, Christmas, etc.). All the technics used to lure us, take multiple forms: voice call, fake banking agents, emailing, text message, mailbox, fake social media account, fake links on comments, fake WhatsApp account, etc.

More than ever, it is essential to keep a closer attention at all details on any request you receive.

Adopt the right behaviors to protect yourself

Here are some practices that can help you prevent from malicious attempts:

Before taking action, ask yourself if this seems legitimate and expected
Never click on any attachment or link without applying any checks
Use other trusted communication channel to verify your requester identity
Search for suspicious signs: style or grammatical mistakes, wrong logo usage, missing signature, uncommon email address, etc.
Liaise with your local authorities for more guidance on how to report malicious attempts
