FAQ

Q1. Why should you choose SmartProtect Plus ?

  • A ‘Multi-generational’ solution to protect your entire Family
SmartProtect Plus empowers you to protect not only yourself but all of your family members who live in Hong Kong - from your spouse, parents, and parents-in-law (aged up to 80 years old) to your children aged from 6 months to 17 years old, even those as old as 23, provided they are unmarried but are still studying full time.
  • Hassle free, one-policy-for-everyone arrangement
Having one policy to protect everyone against accidents makes family admin and planning a breeze.
  • Coverage flexibility delivers value for money
With the options of having standalone insured limit which is separately applicable to each eligible family member (Individual Coverage) or sharing an overall limit with everyone (Shared Coverage), you get full flexibility to get the right protection for your family; beyond that you also save money.

Q2.  Can I use SmartProtect Plus to insure family members without a formal occupation, such as housewives and retirees?

Yes, you can. Both housewives and retired persons aged between 18 and 80 years old are eligible insured persons. This insurance also covers any Class 3# working individuals. However, applications for individuals working in a Class 4 Occupation# are subject to our approval.

#Please refer to the Occupation Class List

Q3. Should I take out the Income or Payment Protection option?

(Not appliable to Lite plan)

Yes, if you are worried that an accident causing a suffering disability would affect your income or ability to meet expenses such as utilities bills, mortgages and other such regular payments.

If you or any of your aged 18 - 65 family members work in Hong Kong and would like extra protection against permanent total disablement and/or temporary total disablement (disablement for an initial period of at least 30 days, and then each subsequent period of disablement of at least 30 days, up to a total of 6 periods in aggregate (including the initial period)), you can consider either

  • Income Protection, which gives you a lump sum payment, OR
  • Payment Protection, which cover expenses such as credit card payment, household utilities bills severity (e.g. electricity, water, internet, mobile phone services), personal loans (e.g. study loan), mortgage payments, or rent.

Please note that you will need to submit supporting documents such as medical reports, salary slips or income records with MPF statements or tax returns records for the self-employed when filing a claim.

Q4. Should I consider the Sports Protection option?

(Not appliable to Lite plan)

Yes, if you or your family members (aged under 66) are passionate about sports or outdoor activities in Hong Kong.

This option gives you:

  • An extra 25% sum insured limit for Accidental Death and Permanent Disablement, Accidental Medical Expenses and Personal Liability
  • Protection for cardiac arrest, and damage to your sports equipment and sportswear (must be submitted together with a claim for Accidental Medical Expenses)

Please note that this cover is not valid for people taking part in a sporting activity as a professional who can get paid or rewarded. The activities listed below are also excluded from coverage:

  • speed contest or race other than on foot, such as swimming race, motor rally, motor competition, riding or driving;
  • deep water diving deeper than 40 metres;
  • sports activities at an altitude limit over 5,000 metres;
  • sports activities during a pandemic or epidemic where the government has mandated compulsory quarantine or where self-isolation arrangements have been breached.

Q5.  Which plans are available for Core Cover?

You can choose Lite plan or Basic Plan as your Core Cover plan. The plan selected for Core Cover applies to all insured persons under the same policy.

Q6.  Can I get reimbursed for medical expenses on Chinese herbalists, bonesetters or acupuncturists?

Yes. Accidental medical expenses cover consultations from Chinese herbalist, bonesetter or acupuncturist on ‘per accident’ basis, which means expenses from different accidents (even food poisoning) are covered no matter how many accidents occur during the period of insurance. There is a limit on the total claim amount per accident.

Chiropractor and physiotherapist expenses are covered but they are not covered on “per accident” basis. They are covered on a “per period of insurance” basis, which means that there is an aggregate limit for all claims during the period of insurance.

Q7.  Does SmartProtect Plus offer extra benefits for accidents occurring in the Greater Bay Area?

Yes, it does.  If an insured person gets injured by accident within the Greater Bay Area^^ (excluding the area of Hong Kong SAR) and should the accident result in either Accidental Death or Permanent Disablement, we will pay double indemnity on the Accidental Death and Permanent Disablement benefit of your policy.

^^The Greater Bay Area refers to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, which includes the two Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao, and the following nine municipalities located in the province of Guangdong: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing.

Q8.  What sports equipment are covered under the Sports Protection option?

The option covers all Sports Equipment (excluding any electronic or motorized equipment) that is owned by an insured person and used during sports activities, such as balls, bats, sticks for hockey and lacrosse, racquets and nets for tennis, bicycle, golf equipment, skiing/snowboarding gears, etc.

A claim under this benefit must be made together with a claim submitted under Section 2 Accidental Medical Expenses.

Q9.  If more than one insured person suffer an accidental death in the same accident, how are the claims settled under the Shared Coverage?

In this case, the maximum benefit limit will be divided by the number of insured persons who died in the same accident, and the benefits will be paid to the estate of each insured person involved.

Q10.  When two or more claims are submitted at the same time, how are they settled under a Shared Coverage policy?

If there are more than one claim submitted at the same time, according to the accident dates, the claim for the earliest accident will be handled and paid first (provided that the claimant has complied with all terms and conditions of the insurance policy and provided AXA with all the necessary documents).

Q11.   When should I submit a claim?

It’s important for you to seek our assistance as soon as possible.

You or the Insured Person must:

  • give written notification to AXA within 30 days after an accident happens to you or to one of your family members. Please give us complete details about what exactly happened as well as information about the injuries or losses suffered by the insured people and third parties as a result of the accident.
  • immediately send AXA any writ or summons and – as soon as possible – any letters, claims or other documents which are related to the accident.

The unpaid balance of any outstanding premium due for an insured person who died from an accident shall be deducted from the benefits payable under this policy.

Q12.  How are claims settled when a policyholder who is also an insured person suffers an immediate death in an accident during the policy year?

As per the terms of this policy, all benefits (except for Personal Liability) are paid to the policyholder unless we agreed to different terms after receiving a written request to do so from the policyholder.

However, when a policyholder who is also an insured person suffers an accidental death, AXA will pay all accidental death benefits to the estate of the policyholder. In case a policyholder (who is also an insured person) has made special request to AXA to pay his accidental death benefit to a specific person or organisation, AXA has discretion to agree; and if AXA agrees, AXA will send out endorsement or confirmation letter to the policyholder.

Please note that the policy shall also be terminated upon the death of the policyholder.

Q13. Can I add or remove an insured person from the policy during the insurance period?

Yes, you can. All you need to do is give us a 60 days’ written notice. The following conditions also apply:

  1. When adding an insured person
You will need to pay an additional premium calculated on a pro-rata basis from the time we approve the addition of the additional insured person.
  2. When removing an insured person
Assuming no claims have been made – or are to be made – during the period of insurance of the insured person you want to remove from your policy, we will refund you a portion of the premium on a pro-rata basis for the cancelled period of insurance. However, the minimum premium for the policy is not refundable.

You shall immediately return the refunded premium to us on demand should any claim in respect of the removed insured person were to be made prior to the removal date of that insured person from the Policy.

Q14.  Can I cancel my policy or can AXA cancel my policy?

Of course you can cancel the policy! Just give us a 30 days’ prior written notice to cancel the policy, similarly, AXA reserves the right to give you a 30 days’ prior written notice to cancel the policy.

We will give you a pro-rata refund for the premium paid for the unused portion of period of insurance, calculated on a pro-rata basis, which is equivalent to the portion of the premium you have paid that would have covered that period (i.e. the period your policy was not in force). This refund is not applicable if you have made a claim or plan to make a claim during the current period of insurance. However, the minimum premium as stated in policy wordings will not be refunded.
