When people think of Sammi Cheng, they often picture her dazzling on stage and her fit, toned physique. As the saying goes, ‘One minute on stage requires ten years of hard work behind the scenes.’ What the audience witnesses is just the culmination of her dedication – beneath her remarkable performances and impressive physique lies an unwavering determination. Every time she faces a challenge, she not only rises to the occasion but also emerges stronger and more confident.

Her story has inspired countless individuals along the way, and AXA's global brand promise, ‘Know You Can,’ perfectly aligns with her beliefs, as both convey uplifting messages. Additionally, the brand's recent advertising campaign encourages people to keep on playing sports and persevere when challenges arise. This philosophy resonates deeply with Sammi’s values. Let’s step into her world and discover how she continues to face challenges fearlessly—in sports, in the performing arts, and in life!

‘Without exercise, I wouldn’t be who I am.’

Between 2005 and 2006, Sammi struggled with her mental health, which led her to develop a dedicated exercise routine. Before she knew it, this habit had lasted for 20 years. She shares, ‘I love running, usually starting with 8 kilometres. Sweating really helps me feel healthier and more open. Exercise isn’t just for the body; it cleanses my mind too.’ This commitment has brought noticeable changes in both her body and mind, and has even inspired her family to embrace exercise. ‘Without exercise, I wouldn't be who I am now,’ Sammi adds with a smile.

‘Sports have taught me how to deal with setbacks.’

Not only have sports kept her healthy and cheerful, but they’ve also shown her how to face setbacks head-on. Acting is a demanding career, and Sammi acknowledges that every role and stage performance requires immense effort. However, the results don’t always meet expectations – transitioning from comedy to drama, for instance, was particularly tough.

‘There were times when I wanted to give up, but I reminded myself what “Keep the passion” truly means. Sports have taught me to persevere and to deal with adversity. When I feel like quitting, I tell myself to take a break. Behind the urge to give up, there’s often room for reflection. It's just that when we’re worn out, we might not think about it right away.’ In 2023, an illness forced her to postpone her concerts.  Although this understandably affected her mood, she chose to shift her mindset and stay committed to her training rather than blame herself. In 2024, she returned in great shape for a memorable performance. ‘Looking back at the postponement, I see it as a test that strengthened my mind, body, and resilience to take on whatever comes my way.’

‘Perseverance is success.’

Reflecting on Sammi's accomplishments in the music and film industries, many would agree that she is undeniably successful. However, Sammi has her own definition of success: ‘Success isn’t being the fastest runner; it’s for those who keep running. As long as you keep trying and persevering, it’s already a success!’ Whether in sports or in life, she encourages everyone to practice self-appreciation with ‘Well done’ and to validate their efforts every step of the way to stay motivated and keep moving forward.

She also shares this sentiment when discussing AXA's global branding campaign, ‘Keep on playing sports.’ ‘It echoes my personal mantra: always stay true to yourself, whether it's keeping fit, running, or swimming, and never giving up in the face of challenges. I understand that we encounter different obstacles at various stages of our lives. For instance, physical and mental changes can sometimes make it hard to fully commit to exercise. I’ve faced similar challenges as well. But I want you to know that you’re not alone in this. There’re many people and organisations around you who are there to support you. The most important thing is not to isolate yourself!’

'Keep Going, embrace every view in life.’

Despite her many years in the industry, Sammi continues to pursue her passions and relishes the feeling of ongoing improvement. ‘The last time I wore a red suit to a music awards ceremony; it was the same suit I donned when I won the same award in 2000. In a way, it reflects my ‘Keep Going’ attitude. I believe you must look forward to the future while being grateful for the past. I wouldn't be where I am today without those experiences.’

Whether it’s the year 2000 or 2025, Sammi remains committed to her journey of ‘Keep Going’, constantly seeking breakthroughs and looking forward to the next scenery of her life. AXA, as a leader in health protection, will continue to walk alongside Sammi, encouraging the public to safeguard their health and well-being through regular exercise.
